Honda CBR600RR

The Honda CBR600RR is a 599 cc (36.6 cu in) sport motorcycle that was introduced by Honda in 2003 as a race replica version of Hondas CBRFx series motorcycles. It won every Supersport World Championship title from 2002 to 2008. It shares its racing DNA with the CBR1000RR Fireblade. It competes with other high performance 600cc supersports machines such as the Ducati 848, Yamaha R6, Triumph Daytona 675, Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R and the Suzuki GSXR600. Also, Its racing genes have also dripped down into the Honda CBR250R.

History

Racing roots

The CBR600RR was developed from and inspired by the Honda RC211V MotoGP bike. The similar physical appearance of the CBR600RR and RC211V was intentional. Underneath the bike was MotoGP technologies that were made available for the first time on a production motorcycle, such as the Unit Pro-Link rear suspension and Dual Stage Fuel Injection (PGM-DSFI). Both were taken directly from Hondas MotoGP bike. The RR, or race replica, suffix was added to emphasize racing characteristics such as an advanced braced swingarm, center-up exhaust system, and more aggressive riding position. The 2003 model carried over to 2004 technically unchanged, with the only addition of an oxygen sensor and new color schemes.

2005 revision

2006 CBR600RR
Unit Pro-Link swingarm
In 2005, the CBR600RR received a major revision with new bodywork, fully adjustable inverted front forks, race-inspired disc brakes with radial-mounted four-piston calipers, and an entirely new aluminum frame, swingarm and rear shock. The midrange power was also increased. These changes along with additional refinements to the engine and exhaust system all came together to bring CBR600RRs wet weight down by 22 lb (10.0 kg), and dry weight by 9 lb (4.1 kg) Except for new color schemes, the 2006 model was unchanged from the 2005 model.

2007 redesign

2007 CBR600RR at theInternational Motorcycle Show
On September 6, 2006, Honda revealed an all new CBR600RR for the 2007 model year.
The CBR600s most radical redesign since the introduction of the RR in 2003 is highlighted by a whole new engine, frame, and bodywork that results in a smaller, lighter, more-powerful CBR600RR with a class-leading power-to-weight ratio and unparalleled performance.
Weight was the primary focus of the redesign. The result was a 20 lb (9.1 kg) reduction in dry weight over the 2006 model, from 361 lb (163.7 kg)[3] to 341 lb (154.7 kg).
In redesigning the CBR600RR for lighter weight and increased performance, Hondas engineers started with the engine. The completely new engine was smaller and lighter than its predecessor, the designers having used careful positioning of all internal components to achieve significant reductions in the motors length, width, and height, as well as reducing weight by 2 kg (4.4 lb) compared to the 2006 models powerplant. Horsepower increased to about 105 hp (78 kW) measured in independent tests.

2007 CBR600RR at theInternational Motorcycle Show
The frame was lighter, slimmer, and more compact than that of the 2006 CBR600RR. The frame was produced using what Honda calls Fine Die-Cast (FDC) technology, which allowed them to build a lighter frame without compromising strength or rigidity. The handling of the new bike was sharpened by its 22 mm (0.87 in) shorter wheelbase, as well as by the designers focus on strict mass centralization. Despite the shorter wheelbase, the 2007 models swingarm was 5 mm (0.20 in) longer than that of the 2006, made possible by the more compact dimensions of the new bikes engine.
The suspension of the 2007 model was carried over almost unchanged from the 2006 bike, with the same 41 mm (1.61 in) inverted fork in front, and Hondas Unit Pro-Link rear suspension configuration damping the rear wheel. The new three-spoke cast aluminum wheels were also lighter than those on the 2006 bike, which further contributed to the enhanced performance of the suspension. The brakes featured dual radial-mount four-piston calipers and twin 310 mm (12.20 in) discs at the front, and a single-piston caliper and a 220 mm (8.66 in) disc at the rear. Hidden below the steering head was an updated version of the Honda Electronic Steering Damper (HESD) system, which was also available on the CBR1000RR.
The smaller, sharper-edged new front upper fairing was dominated by the large central ram-air duct which fed the airbox through an opening in the steering head section of the frame and was separated from the sides of the fairing by a large gap which Honda said was for air management purposes. The tail-section was similarly smaller and sharper-edged, riding atop a heavily restyled under-seat muffler.
The motorcycle carried over with only color scheme changes for the 2008 model year.

Combined ABS prototype

On June 9, 2008, Honda revealed a CBR600RR prototype that featured an all new braking system branded as Combined ABS which integrated combined braking, anti-lock braking, and brake-by-wire systems. Combined ABS used a computer control unit to ensure the correct balance of front and rear brake use and also controlled when the ABS should engage. The system was designed to be as unobtrusive as possible by delaying the engagement of the ABS until the last possible moment. Combined ABS was not made available on the production 2008 CBR600RR.

2009 redesign

2010 Honda CBR600RR
On September 5, 2008, Honda introduced a revised CBR600RR for the 2009 model year. Combined ABS became available as an option. Other changes included updates to the engine such as changes to its pistons, cylinder head and exhaust that Honda claims will increase torque delivery between 8,000-12,000 rpm with a 3.5% increase in torque at 10,000 rpm. The CBR600RR’s engine also received a new high resistance valve lifter and a popup valve system inherited from the CBR1000RR. Included also are improved fairings that enhanced stability and reduce noise emission levels, and new color schemes which were designed to attract a wider range of riders. Although all of these changes involved the addition of some materials, the overall weight of the 2009 CBR600RR remained the same as the 2008 model. This was achieved through weight savings in the engine, exhaust, and chassis.
The 2009 CBR600RR carried over with only color scheme changes for the 2010, 2011 and 2012 model years.

Competition

2007

For the 2007 model year, the CBR600RR competed with the Ducati 749, a completely redesigned Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R, the Suzuki GSX-R600, the Triumph Daytona 675, and the Yamaha YZF-R6. Shootout comparisons by motorcycle magazines consistently awarded the CBR600RR first place in the super sport class.Major print and online publishers praise the bike for its powerful engine and class-leading light weight.

2008

For the 2008 model year, the CBR600RR continued to compete with the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R, a revised Suzuki GSX-R600, the Triumph Daytona 675, and a revised Yamaha YZF-R6. Even with no technical changes from the 2007 model, the CBR600RR continued to win middleweight shootouts including Sport Riders middle weight shootout, Motorcycle-USAs middleweight comparison, and Motorcycle.coms middleweight comparison.

Racing

As of 2010, in the Supersport World Championship, the CBR600 has claimed seven out of eight titles since its introduction in 2003, whilst also helping Honda to eight manufacturers crowns since 2003.

Audi R18 e-tron quattro, Le Mans 2012

  • World Championship winning trio will race for Audi for the fourth consecutive year
  • Two other teams with young and established drivers
  • Three Audi R18 e-tron quattro cars at Le Mans and at Spa
INGOLSTADT/PARIS : February 2, 2013 – Audi has established powerful driver pairings for its commitment in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). The respective entries were confirmed today by the Selection Committee of the ACO and the FIA. Three Audi R18 e-tron quattro cars will be competing at the Spa 6 Hours and the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2013. At each of the six other WEC rounds, Audi will be fielding two hybrid sports cars.

Drivers Marcel Fässler (CH), André Lotterer (D) and Benoît Tréluyer (F) are jointly tackling the title defense. The trio has been racing together for Audi since 2010 and celebrated the WEC drivers’ title and victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours last year, their biggest successes so far. Eight-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen (DK) and Allan McNish (GB), who has won at La Sarthe twice, are forming a team with Loïc Duval in 2013 for the first time. The Frenchman made his debut with Audi in 2012 and won the Spa 6 Hours. The two driver teams will be competing at all eight WEC rounds.

At the Spa 6 Hours and the Le Mans 24 Hours, Audi is relying on an additional driver line-up. The Brazilian Lucas di Grassi, who debuted with Audi in the WEC at his home round at São Paulo last year and immediately qualified on the front row, will be driving a third R18 e-tron quattro. He is sharing the cockpit this season with the Spaniard Marc Gené, last year’s winner of the Spa 6 Hours. Oliver Jarvis is the third driver in this combination. In the Audi R8 GRAND-AM, the Briton won the GT class at the Daytona 24 Hours a week ago.

“With these three combinations we’ve put together an international team that we expect a lot of,” says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. “Our younger drivers will have the chance to establish themselves alongside the experienced Audi drivers who have really been pleasing us with their top results in all these years. The new SEAT Ibiza – dynamic and innovative

2012 SEAT Ibiza 5-Door

•    New design language with clear identity
•    Improved functionality for day-to-day life
•    Upgraded quality throughout
•    Three body styles, perfect for every lifestyle
•    Thrilling driving fun thanks to state-of-the-art technology
•    Ibiza E-Ecomotive with 89 grams/km CO2
•    1.4 TSI and 110 kW (150 hp) in Ibiza ST, too

The next generation of the successful Spanish model is here – the new SEAT Ibiza captures the heart with its young, emotional design and fun-to-drive zest, and convinces the head with its innovative technologies and further improved functionality and quality.

The new line-up offers enormous breadth to meet every individual demand – from the compact and sporty three-door Ibiza SC, to the dynamic and universal five-door Ibiza, to the elegantly practical Ibiza ST estate car; from the extremely efficient Ibiza E-Ecomotive with 89 grams of CO2/km to the exceptionally sporty Ibiza FR with 110 kW (150 hp). There are two strengths in particular that are common to all versions – a very high standard of quality and outstanding value for money. Market introduction of the new Ibiza is scheduled for spring 2012.

The Ibiza is one of the best-selling models in its segment across Europe – over 500,000 people so far have opted for one of the sporty, compact models from the Spanish brand. And the average age of Ibiza buyers is the youngest among in its market category. Design has long been one of the Ibiza’s foremost strengths - named as the most important reason for purchase by customers. And this is set to gain even more ground in future – with its modern, fresh and optimistic look, the new Ibiza marks a further significant development of the SEAT design identity and prepares the way for future models.

“The Ibiza is an important foundation of our brand. With the new generation, we are taking a clear step forward – the fresh and young design language speaks to SEAT’s unique and distinctive character. It underscores the precision and quality of our products,” says James Muir, the President of SEAT, S.A. “This makes the new Ibiza a crucial element in SEAT’s forward strategy. Its success will grow even further, not least in our new market of China.”

Beneath its expressive design, the new Ibiza offers an impressive array of innovative technologies. The latest-generation state-of-the-art TDI and TSI power units, the DSG transmissions and the start/stop system combine dynamics with exceptional efficiency and guarantee SEAT’s signature driving fun.

A further example is the Portable Media System with touchscreen monitor. It will combine the functions of a navigation system, on-board computer, audio system and hands-free device. While it is fully integrated into the Ibiza’s on-board electronics, it is also removable for use on-the-go. The introduction of SEAT’s Portable Media System will come later in 2012.

“The new Ibiza is a clear showcase for SEAT’s technical expertise. Emotional design, a thrilling drive and an exceptionally high quality standard deliver an extremely distinctive product character – and now with improved functionality. The Ibiza is the sportiest and most versatile offering in its competitive field,”
says Dr. Matthias Rabe, Executive Vice President for Research and Development at SEAT, S.A.

The new design

Sporty character and high product quality are written all over the new Ibiza’s face – SEAT Design stands for technology and precision, as well as for youthful avant garde and the sheer joy of life. The distinctive centrepiece is the trapezoidal grille featuring the SEAT logo. The flatter proportions and horizontal honeycomb structure of the grille and the lower air intake emphasise the width of the new Ibiza. The bumpers front and rear have been redesigned with a look that is particularly accentuated on the sporty Ibiza FR version. Standard equipment on the FR and available as an option on other models are the large fog lamps with integrated cornering light.

Attention to detail

The sophisticated design of the headlamps bears testament to the enormous attention afforded by SEAT to the details. The edgy style of the lamps is a hallmark feature of the new SEAT design language, while being perfectly integrated into the Ibiza’s sculptural form. The headlamps are available in two halogen versions or with optional bi-xenon lamps and LED daytime running lights. The latter trace the form of the headlamps to deliver a unique light signature, as do the optional LED rear lights.

Clear and athletic character

From the side, the new Ibiza looks like a precisely hewn and finely honed sculpture on wheels. The characteristic “Línea Dinámica” runs from the headlamps over the powerfully drawn wheel arches to the rear. A second, equally sharp character line runs across the muscular rear shoulders to the rear lamps. These powerful lines and the interplay of taut surfaces lend the Ibiza an athletic character – on both the coupé-like three-door and the universal five-door. And even the functional estate car conveys an unmatched look of dynamism – without any restriction to its exceptional utility.

“The new-generation Ibiza fits perfectly into the SEAT brand identity. It has a powerful and solid stance, it displays a dynamic character and yet always remains refined and self-confident,”
says Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, Head of SEAT Design.

Premium interior

The emotional power of the exterior design is reflected in the interior, too – with a forceful but extremely minimalist and clearly structured cockpit design. The feeling of quality, the high precision of the workmanship, the wide choice of colours and materials ranging all the way to fine leather upholstery serve to underscore SEAT’s standards. The level of detail can be sensed throughout the new Ibiza – on the steering wheel, in the new design of the climatronic, in the new paint surfaces. The focus, however, always remains on functionality – the new instrument binnacle with its improved display is one example, the significantly larger glove compartment, another. With a generous storage volume of 10.7 litres, this compartment now offers space for a lot more accessories and useful items than simply a pair of gloves.

The perfect package for every requirement

With its three body styles, the new Ibiza fits perfectly to every lifestyle. The three-door Ibiza SC and the five-door Ibiza are not only design masterpieces, but are also very well equipped to cope with the practical challenges of everyday life, with an interior that is generous for this class of vehicle, a luggage volume of 284 or 292 litres and a variable rear bench. The estate bodyshell of the Ibiza ST offers a very high degree of functionality. Despite its sporty design, the load volume of 430 to a maximum of 1,164 litres is surprisingly generous. Even two bicycles will fit inside – with front wheels disassembled, of course.

Sporty and efficient engines

The engine line-up is just as broad. The range of petrol units extends from the  economical 1.2 litre with 44 kW (60 hp) to the immensely perky 1.4 TSI with supercharger and turbocharger. 110 kW (150 hp) and the standard-fit DSG transmission catapult the Ibiza to 100 km/h in just 7.8 seconds, and onwards to an impressive top speed of 212 km/h. In the new Ibiza, this power unit is now also available for the ST estate version. Particular efficiency is delivered by the Ibiza 1.2 TSI Ecomotive – the state-of-the-art power unit with 77 kW (105 hp) delivers refined drive with its maximum torque of 175 Newton metres at just 1,550 r/min, yet sips on an average of just 5.1 litres/100 km – thanks also to the start/stop technology that is fitted as standard.

Top marks in consumption and emissions

The TDI engines are even more efficient when it comes to fuel consumption and emissions. The efficiency highlight is the Ibiza 1.2 TDI E-Ecomotive, also with a start/stop system. Its average fuel consumption is a mere 3.4 litres, equating to a first-class CO2 figure of 89 grams/km – in all bodyshell variants. Yet the compact hi-tech TDI delivers attractive performance with its 55 kW (75 hp) and its very respectable torque of 180 Newton metres. The sporty pinnacle of the Ibiza diesel line-up is the 2.0 TDI with 105 kW (143 hp). No competitor in this segment offers such a powerful diesel; no other masters the combination of performance and efficiency so perfectly – a top speed of 210 km/h comes with an average fuel consumption of just 4.6 litres.

Hi-tech in drive and running gear

Just as modern as the engines in the new Ibiza are the transmissions. Alongside perfectly spaced five and six-speed manual gearboxes, a number of engines are offered with DSG transmissions either as standard equipment or as an option. This dual-clutch transmission offers not only the comfort of an automatic, but also the benefit of compelling efficiency. The running gear of the new Ibiza boasts an extremely sophisticated layout that has been carefully fine tuned, giving the compact model handling characteristics that are as sporty as they are safe. The precise steering and the perfectly tuned ESP stability control, as well as the XDS electronic differential lock (as of 100 hp) deliver safety even in difficult situations. A powerful brake system with ABS is a case in point. The new Ibiza runs on wheels ranging in size from 15 to 17 inches and sporting a new design.

Comprehensive equipment, perfect individualisation

The equipment lines of the Ibiza range have also been revised, independent of bodyshell form. The base model Reference makes a compelling argument with all the key comfort and safety features. Above it is the Style version, which comes with air conditioning as standard. The Ibiza FR sets particularly sporty accents with accentuated design elements front and rear, alloy wheels and a leather-clad steering wheel. And every SEAT can be adapted perfectly to suit personal style and individual preferences with an extensive range of colours, options and accessories.

And the Ibiza Cupra Naturally, the super-sporty top model in the Ibiza line-up will also have a successor. Exceptional performance and thrilling dynamics are guaranteed, but not before mid 2012.
